Additional Information

Fort Frederica National Monument will host a Colonial Days event on March 24, 2018.

Fort Frederica was founded in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe as the southernmost bulwark against Spanish aggression. Located on the edge of the frontier the settlers of Frederica tasked with creating their own homes, growing their own food, serving in the militia, and continuing their trades as shoe makers, coopers, and doctors.

The event will honor the settlers who inhabited Fort Frederica from 1736-1758. The skills and trades that they brought with them and further developed here in the New World will be put on display by living historians, with many of the activities being hands-on and kid friendly such as candle dipping, tabby making, cloth dying, Spanish moss weaving, and 18th century children's games.

The event will feature hands-on activities of candle making (visitors will be able to dip and take home their own beeswax candle), tabby making (visitors will be able to create and take home their own small tabby block), Spanish Moss processing and pillow making (visitors will make their own small 3”x4” pillow), Natural Dying of cloth (visitors will be able to design and dye their own flag), 18th century children's games such as Game of Graces, Hoops, and Trap Ball will be played, and all children will be able to meet with Oglethorpe's Recruitment Sergeant to be sworn into the British Army.

Heron's company along with the Independent Company of Highlanders and Spanish Garrison will provide musket and cannon firing demonstrations at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm, between demonstrations the soldiers will provide interpretive talks in their respective camps.
