Art enthusiasts in the Golden Isles are invited to view the work of guest artist Philip Bates at ArtTrends Gallery, “the gallery with the orange door”, during St. Simons Island’s Spring Art Crawl, an evening of art and refreshments hosted by six St. Simons Island galleries on March 15th from 4-7 p.m.
Philip Bates has been an artist and art teacher for most of his adult life. He received an MAE degree from the University of Georgia where he studied painting with Lamar Dodd and James Herbert. He has also studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design. Phil states, “My painting and drawing is in a style that has been described as ‘abstract realism.’ The emphasis is on the natural surroundings, often with architectural images included. My process is to photograph or to sketch in various media followed by studio work on larger pieces.” He works in acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media. On his love of painting in acrylics, he comments, “The intensity of the colors reflect the intensity of the Southern coastal light.” Phil’s art has won numerous awards and is displayed in public, private, and business collections throughout Georgia and the U.S. He resides on Eagle Neck in McIntosh County. His work will be on display at ArtTrends Gallery from March 13th through April 28th.
During the crawl, ArtTrends Gallery is also proud to showcase new work by its nine artists: Jennifer Miller Broadus, Karen Burnett, Helen Carmichael, Ella Cart, Dottie Clark, Suzy Dmetruk, Ray Garrett, Trish Rugaber, and Syd Summerhill.
